It varies based on your personality and those of your co-workers. Also a consideration is how high the staff turn-over is. In places where there's a high turnover, people don't bother getting to know the new guy until they're there for a while.



Just do your job, be friendly and approachable, and join in conversation when it seems to be open and something you feel you can contribute in.
