Browser based recorder not recognising external mic jack

0

I'm trying to plug an external mic or audio line into a browser based recorder. When I plug the mic in, it is not automatically recognized.

I have

built in audio analog stereo

and

Channel 1
Channel 2
Channel 1 + 2

as input options

aplay - l returns

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC3236 Analog [ALC3236 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I can run linux diagnostic commands and install new software, but am not sure where to go from here. I have a dual headphone/mic jack.

In the sound panel the mic is just recognized as headphones.
