Install Windows 10 from Ubuntu with only USB 3.0

0

I want to install windows 10 on my lenovo y510p on an internal SSD drive.
Right now I am using only Ubuntu. I managed to install Windows before but wanted to install a newer version.
I formated the SSD completely so I cannot even repair my old version.

I created a bootable USB Stick with Unetbootin and boot from stick.
I manage to get into Setup until the point where it tells me that classical windows 7 error hat some drivers are missing.
(A media driver your copmuter needs is missing etc.).

I assumed it is missing USB 3.0 drivers. So I put them on a different USB Stick and booted together - still the same error.
I looked and looked but cannot find a solution. Is there way to even install Windows with only USB 3.0 ports from Ubuntu? I understand that I need to install the drivers first - but I don't understand how.

Thank you for help already.

  • The answer is "Yes" you can install Windows 10 via USB, just so long as you have the right USB AND Storage drivers for the HDD/SSD installed in the laptop. When you put the drivers on the other USB, did you extract them so you got the driver files (the .sys, .dll and .inf files)? Did you "Browse" to the folder and select the driver to load into memory so the installer could complete? We need more details.

  • Yeah I did extract them so I have the .sys. dll and .inf files - yet while browsing for the drivers it doenst show me anything - i only can choose folders not the files directly - whatever folder i chose (HCSwitch, xHCI) it just says that it did not find any drivers for my device

  • Does it show any storage locations when it comes to the partition wizard? If it doesn't show any disks then it'll inevitably be your SSD or the SATA controller it can't find a suitable driver for. Does it specify the device it needs drivers for? it may be your storage drivers, rather than your USB drivers...?
