(4-a)x1+2x2-x3=1
2x1+(1-a)x2+2x3=2
-x1+2x2+(4-a)x3=-1
The first thing I thought of was writing a coefficient matrice like so:
$$ left[
begin{array}{ccc|c}
(4-a)&2&-1&1\
2&(1-a)&2&2\
-1&2&(4-a)&-1
end{array}
right] $$
And from here use use row operations until you have 4-a alone on the bottom row. But I don't really know how you would go about doing it. Help would be appreciated!
