How to open MS Office files like XLSX, DOCX with google drive by double click?

I've found this question, but the answer given there is outdated since google seems to have abandoned the extension mentioned in it (the extension looks like an old version of google docs, misses most of the crucial functionality, the sheets aren't even able to process simple "if" formula).

I couldn't comment on that since I'm new here, so I created this question to bring the problem back to the attention of the community.

  • It isn't clear why you think that answer is outdated or that the extension has been abandoned. It still appears current and the extension was last updated a month ago.

  • The other question, and that add-on, are basically about opening MS Office files in the Google office suite, which is off-topic here. If that's really what you want to get answered, the best place for the question is probably the Software Recs site, because you're looking for a better add-on (and software recommendations are also off-topic on this site). The only solution for this question or the other is really an add-on. However, the other question escaped closure by clever wording to frame it as a problem to be solved through browser settings.
